Jerry Haha x BACKPACK 01 | The 19-Year-Old Street Style Star Is the Artist to Look Out For
Since the very beginning, TOTEM COLLECTIVE has always been about fine quality daily essentials for the “urbanites" around the world. Whether it's a bike loving architect who also runs a fashion blog in Stockholm, or a restaurateur who spins the disc at underground dance floors in Chengdu, the TOTEM identity is worldly, universal, cool and versatile. It's for those with a worldly opinion and share the same passion for art, music, culture and travels.
And finally, we are launching our second bag product -- BACKPACK 01, adding to the current TOTE 01 as part of the core essential products.
Designed by the former Head of Men’s Bags at Loewe – Maj Wiboe, who is now the mastermind behind Paris-based brand Wiboe Projects, the BACKPACK 01 was inspired by vintage trunks reinterpreted in a modern and clean way.
Following the same design philosophies of our first product – TOTE 01, BACKPACK 01 carries the brand’s signature four-buttons on the front facade with the logo embossed in the center.
The BACKPACK 01 pens up with a rounded zipper line to be able to open fully and a top handle that allows simple hand carry. Strap lengths are adjustable and a computer compartment is added inside which fits a 15-inch laptop. It’s a backpack meant for everyday usage and urban day modern travels.
For the launch of the BACKPACK 01, we took on a cafe stroll with Hong Kong based artist Jerry Haha in the neighbourhood of Wanchai to interpret his young and eccentric sides.
Recently moved back from Japan, Jerry Hahahas been at the forefront of Hong Kong’s street culture since the age of 16. His impeccable and restless style has wowed the older fashion crowd, and his daring moves to break boundaries and traditional mindsets. Having worked or shot by the likes of streetstyle mega players like Hypebeast, Juice, Nike Lab and Levi's, this kid is something so unique and shining coming out from Hong Kong.
“I just want to create, whether it’s music, art or fashion.”
After his return from Japan, Jerry started exploring all sorts of creative forms. From styling, painting, DJ-ing to photography, he is not afraid to open up the imagination and experiment with different medium and creative philosophies.
"Wolfgang Tillmans is one of my favorite photographers. I would take each master's way of working into my sphere, learn from how they create and then interpret his views on objects in my own environment, in my own world”, says Jerry. The 19 year old young man seems to be playful with his style and attitude, but his thoughts and words have this incredible maturity and humbleness tucked inside it, and it's only someone who has experienced far beyond kids his age could say it.
"It was an incredible time living in Tokyo, and I learned so much from the Japanese way of thinking. But right now being home in Hong Kong, there are a lot happening and the community is giving people like me a chance to try out all sorts of things." says the 19 year old artist while he shows us the tote bag he designed, filled with artificial flowers which he is going to decorate his exhibition tonight set up by Hypebeast.
“I just want to create”, says Jerry,“whether it’s music, art, fashion, I feel like the medium is so unlimited today. I’ll always seek for ways to look at things differently and turn itself to be an inspiration to my work.”
