In this holiday travel feature, we dive into one of our favourite sun-drenched destinations on the Spanish coastline. Perched along a dramatic backdrop of rocky cliffs, La Muralla Roja sets itself apart with its vibrant hues and fortress-like formation. Known for his postmodern and eclectic juxtaposition of architectural styles, the Spanish architect fully integrates his baroque sensibilities into this stunning residential project.

Bofill’s interpretation of the Arabic Mediterranean Kasbah has lent itself to several distinct architectural features. Interconnected patios and intertwining stairs break the division between public and private space in this 50-apartment complex. This corresponds to a labyrinthine plan that encourages the community to interact with one another. While it may seem like a chaotic manifestation of protrusions, the geometric plan is in fact an abstraction of the Greek cross that interlocks together when viewed from above.

Probably the most eye-catching feature of La Muralla Roja is the wide-ranging hues of red and blue that highlight its geometric features while adding depth to create an illusion of space. The undulating tones from periwinkle to indigo seamlessly merge itself into the vast expanse of the sky. In doing so, Bofill achieves one of the ultimate goals in space making and re-contextualizes the boundaries between indoor and outdoor space. What would be considered an exposed courtyard instantly becomes an intimate affair through the careful use of scale and colour.

By detracting or highlighting the natural environment through architectural elements, the man-made space is grounded in the context of the landscape that changes according to its function. In contrast to the serene tones of the Mediterranean Sea, the stark redness of the exterior wall creates a strong impression of privacy that protects the inhabitants within. Incidentally for those looking from within, the infinite sky blends into the wall to form a ‘sheltered roof’ that offers the impression of a covered room.

It comes without surprise that La Muralla Roja offers many Tumblr devotees the perfect source of inspiration. The clean lines, dramatic vistas and unique colour palette is a testament to the power of architecture in the field of design. A product of worth is one that carries a wide range of perceptions. For those who believe in intelligent design, Bofill offers the following words of wisdom: “Daily life should not be banalised but exalted to become rich and meaningful.

Definitely words to live by.
